The Meters - Be My Lady 1975

Funk music was a major influence on the development of 1970s disco music, and funk samples were present in most styles of house music and early hip hop music. It is also the main influence of go-go. Funk also has left its mark on new wave, and its pulse is evident in post punk as well.

Barbara Lynn - You Don't Have To Go 1991

Barbara Lynn - You Don't Have To Go 1991
Barbara Lynn - Singer/guitarist Barbara Lynn was a rare commodity during her heyday. Not only was she a female instrumentalist (one of the very first to hit the charts), but she also played left-handed -- quite well at that -- and even wrote some of her own material.

Lynn's music often straddled the line between blues and Southern R&B, and since much of her early work -- including the number one R&B hit "You'll Lose a Good Thing" -- was recorded in New Orleans, it bore the sonic imprint of the Crescent City. Lynn was born Barbara Lynn Ozen in Beaumont, TX, on January 16, 1942; she played the piano as a child before switching to guitar, inspired by Elvis Presley.

In junior high, Lynn formed her own band, Bobbie Lynn and the Idols; at this point, her musical role models veered between bluesmen (Guitar Slim, Jimmy Reed) and female pop singers (Brenda Lee, Connie Francis). After winning a few talent shows and playing some teen dances, the still-underage Lynn started working the local clubs and juke joints, risking getting kicked out of school if she had been discovered.

Singer Joe Barry caught her live act and recommended her to his friend, producer/impresario Huey P. Meaux, aka the Crazy Cajun.

Bobby Womack - The Poet 1981

Bobby Womack - The Poet 1981
Born: in Cleveland, Ohio, Womack was the third of five boys born to Friendly, Sr. and Naomi Womack in a housing project. Taking after their gospel-singing father, Womack and his four brothers Friendly, Jr., Cecil, Harry and Curtis formed

The Womack Brothers and began touring the gospel circuit. One night, soul singer Sam Cooke spotted the Womack Brothers performing and immediately began seeking the group out for a recording contract. Signing with SAR Records, Cooke's own imprint, they eventually agreed to leave the gospel circuit for a career in secular music and the group was renamed as the Valentinos. Shortly afterward, they scored their first charted single, "Lookin' For a Love", which peaked at #8 on the Billboard R&B chart. In 1964, they scored a second hit with "It's All Over Now".

The latter song was written by Womack and would give the singer monetary royalties after The Rolling Stones' cover of "It's All Over Now" hit the top of the UK Singles Chart. The Valentinos' career dwindled after the death of Cooke in December 1964. The group stayed together for a year and a half (recording for Chess Records in the interim), before splitting up in 1966.

They reformed in the late 1960s and recorded a few songs for Jubilee Records in the early 1970s, appearing on Soul Train in 1973. Womack struggled to get noticed in the music industry and secluded himself as a session musician.

Betty Wright - Sevens 1986

Betty Wright - Sevens 1986
Singer Betty Wright proved to be a consistently strong presence on the Miami music scene, primarily throughout the '70s and '80s, although she continues to record. Born on December 21, 1953, in Miami, FL, Wright began her singing career early on as a member of her family's own gospel group the Echoes of Joy.

By the age of 13, Wright had begun appearing on other artists' recordings as a backup singer and two years later was issuing her own solo singles (scoring a Top 40 hit the same year with "Girls Can't Do What the Guys Do") and albums (My First Time Around).

It would be several years, however, before Wright would enjoy her next substantial hit, but it would prove to be worth the wait when 1972's "Clean Up Woman" (notable for its prominent guitar riff and Wright's swaggering lead vocal) peaked at number two on the R&B and number six on the pop charts. In 1974, Wright received a Grammy Award for the song "Where Is the Love?" (not to be confused with the renowned Roberta Flack/Donny Hathaway tune of the same name).

Beverley & Duane - Beverley & Duane 1978

Beverley & Duane - Beverley & Duane 1978
Beverly, incidentally, was pregnant at the time with their first child, and toured for the duration of the pregnancy. Glad I Gotcha, Baby" was receiving airplay at the same time as Peaches and Herb's "Shake Your Groove Thing", while "Living In A World" competed with that group's "Reunited". In 1980, Jon Barrow founded the "Brown Bomber" record label in Detroit with partners that included Beverly and Duane Co-Manager Myron D. Stokes.

The company's first product was the 45-rpm single "Love"; a moving melody that again exploited the marvelous vocal talents of Beverly & Duane (Beverly's upper range voice could shatter glass, putting her in the company of Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald) was released that year. Factoids -- Beverly toured subsequent to album release in expectation of the duo's first child.

She was an administrative assistant at Ford Motor Company. -- Beverly & Duane's first release "Glad I Gotcha Baby" took off in earnest after Detroit pop station WNIC FM 100.3's Alan Almond, the host of the immensely popular and long running "Pillow Talk" program, introduced and placed in top rotation.

Tracks:

1. Glad I Gotcha Baby
2. We Got to Stick Together

4. Surround Me
5. Take a Ride

BB&Q Band - Genie 1985

BB&Q Band - Genie 1985
All good performers at some time in their carrear will be subjected and objectively pursued to consult a solo carrear. The talented Curtis Hairston leads the way on vocals. Sample his delightful voice on the track entitled 'dreamer'. One of many excellent hits before the launch of his solo career.

If you’re a fan of 80’s soul & funk, you’ll probably remember this album from its first release back in 1985. This is a re-issue of the ‘Genie’ album, but bundled in with the original track line up are a host of remixes by the likes of Shep Pettibone and Ben Liebrand. Some of these remixes were released as 12” singles following the original release of the album. The bands lead vocalist, Curtis Hairston had one of the most underrated voices of that era.

There’s no doubt about it, he was a class act. His performance on this album is outstanding. Even with the added bonus of all the extra remixes, the title track ‘Genie’ IMO is still the pick of the bunch on this release. Curtis sadly passed away aged 34 in 1996 after losing his battle with diabetes. What a waste of a talent.

This album is actually dedicated to him. In closing, if you want to replace your old vinyl copy of ‘Genie’ you can’t go wrong with this.

CD:

1. Genie
2. Main Attraction
3. Won't You be With Me Tonight
4. Don't Force It

Barry White - The Man 1978

Barry White - The Man 1978
These are some of the very best songs in career. The overwhelmingly strings, mixed with disco beats, makes this CD all the more beautiful.

My favorites are "September When I First Met You," a gorgeous song, with awesome horns and strings throughout, "Look At Her," a cool disco-flavored love song, and "Just the Way You Are" (his version throws Billy Joel's in the shade!) I never cared for that song very much, until I heard his version.

Now, I love it... An excellent Album.
